  • Where Dreams Go to Die (Ginger Runner). Gary Robbins started twice at the Barkley Marathons. Twice he failed in the 5th and final lap. The film documents his preparation and race(s).
  • The Why - Running 100 Miles (Billy Yang) Renowned film maker Billy Yang looks into why someone runs 100 miles as told through his own experience at the Leadville 100 this past summer.
  • Hurt 100 Film - We Wouldn't Want it to be Easy (Pursuit Film) The film tells the story of the HURT ohana, or family, that has guided runners on this 100 mile journey for nearly 20 years.
  • 50 Days (Denis Wischniewski) In summer of 2016, Dennis Wischniewski started a run from Munich to Istambul. He aimed to arrive there within 50 days. 
  • Impossible: La Ultra – The High (Upslope Productions) Running 333 kilometers through the remote region of Ladakh in the Indian Himalayas – is this impossible?
  • Island - Change your Life (JC Pieri) The Mountains Legacy Team, a group of runners and filmmakers, travels and runs through Island. 
  • Ramsay's Round (Claire and Dave McLeod) Alicia Hudelson runs the famous Ramsay Round in Scotland - across 24 mountains in under 24 hours - and becomes the 100th recorded finisher.
  • The Road to Sparta (Barney Spender) Each year since 1983, runners of the Spartathlon race in Greece trace the historic footsteps of the Athenian messenger Pheidippides. This film follows four runners of the 2014 race, who face the challenges of the 153 mile course. One of them is the renowned ultrarunner Dean Karnazes. 
  • The Run (Vikesh Khare/Anupam Sharma) Former Australian politician and ultrarunner Pat Farmer sets out to run the full length of India on his "Spirit of India Run". 

  • Conquering the Dragon (Richard Heap / Ourea Events, 2017, 0:37:13) 💲 It is the fourth edition oft he Dragon’s Back Ultra – after the inaugural race 1992 and the races in 2012 and 2015. The film follows five participants of the race on their journey on the back of the dragon. 
  • Breaking 60 - Challenging the Impossible (Robin Lee, 2017, 0:45:00) 💲 A 298 kilometre battle with over 14,000 metres of elevation gain in hills around Hong Kong, Breaking 60 follows the hopes of four ultrarunners who have one goal in mind – to break 60 hours. 
  • Trailpike (Geoff Cox / Richard Berry, 2017, 0:12:00). Poet and fellrunner Geoff Cox created a series of 3 short poetic films recognizing the three fellrunning legends that have given their names to three legendary fell running rounds: Bob Graham, Joss Naylor, Gerry Charnley.  
  • Controlled Silence (Altra, 2017, 0:04:59) Altra Elite Athlete Gediminas Grinius has done his military service overseas, suffered from PTSD. He found running as therapy, but over the years running has become more than that - it is now a real passion. 
  • Testing Ourselves (Salomon/Kilian Jornet&Emelie Forsberg, 2017, 0:16:17). Kilian Jornet and Emelie Forsberg set out to climb Cho Oyu. For Kilian the purpose of this climb was to acclimatize for his Everest attempt.
  • UTWT 2016 - Episode 06 (UTWT, 2017, 0:52:25). Next episode of the UTWT race reports - this time covering the Western States Endurance Run and the Eiger Ultra Trail 2017.
  • Rhythm (Black Diamond, 2017, 1:53). Joe Grant does not only like to run. He likes to play outside, in the heart of the Alps, in search of something he calls "rhythm". 


4 Desert Challenge
  • Desert Runners (Jennifer Steinman, 2013, 1:31:00) 💲 A group of non-professional runners compete at the 4 Deserts race series that combines four races of 250 km length through four different deserts: Gobi, Atacama, Sahara and Antarctica. Trailer here.  
  • Desert Runners (Jennifer Steinman, 2011, 0:22:34). Short documentary that follows four runners – Samantha Gash, David O’Brien, Ricky Paugh, and Lisa Tamati competing in the 4 Desert Challenge to achieve the Desert Grand Slam. 

Arrowhead 135
  • Among the Wild: Arrowhead 135 (AdventureMNFilms, 2015, 0:29:00) 💲 The Arrowhead 135 is an ultramarathon held in winter in Minnesota. It is notorious for its harsh conditions with deep snow and bitter cold. The film follows three athletes attempting the Arrowhead – on ski, on bike and on foot. 

Badwater 135
  • Running on the Sun (Mel Stuart, 2000, 1:39:56) The film follows athletes as they run 135 miles in the 1999 Badwater Ultramarathon, starting in California's Death Valley and ending at Whitney Portal, the trailhead to Mount Whitney. 
  • Distance of Truth (Roger Hendrix, 2008, 1:30:00) 💲 The film features Canadian Ferg Hawke as well as Scott Jurek, Dr. Ben Jones, Charlie Engle, Ray Zahab, Monica Scholz, Pam Reed, Dean Karnazes, Marshal Ulrich, and Mike Sweeney as they experience the Badwater 135 ultramarathon race in 2005.   • Akos Konya - Badwater Ultramarathon Documentary (Gary Roberts / ArmTV, 2013, 2:03:30). Akos Konya, a runner from Hungary who emigrated to the United States in 2001, emerged to the ultrarunning scene, when he placed second to Scott Jurek in 2006. He repeated his second place finishes in 2007 and 2008. This film chronicles his race in 2006.
  • Running for Life (Marco Neiva, in Portuguese with English subtitles, 2014, 0:59:44) Ultrarunner Carlos Sa won the Badwater Ultramarathon in 2013. He returned to Badwater in 2014, as the 2nd and the 4th of the 2013 race, Grant Maughan and Harvey Lewis. The film documents how the race unfolds.

Barkley Marathons

Bear 100
  • Dancing the Bear (Lott Media, 2007, 0:53:56) This documentary chronicles the experience of two middle-of-the-pack runners, Kelly Bradbury and Mary Workman, during the 2004 Bear 100 Endurance Run.

Bridger Ridge Run
  • Wind Drinkers: 30 Years of the Bridger Ridge Run: Episode 1 and episode 2 (Epic Montana, 2015, 23:16 in 2 episodes) In 2015, for the 30th time, a diverse group of runners tested themselves over 20 miles on the exposed spine of the Bridger Mountains outside of Bozeman, Montana.

Cape Wrath Ultra
  • Cape Wrath Ultra (Team BMC, 2016, 0:31:03) The film follows the progress of the inaugural race in May 2016, focussing on both the landscape and the participants.

Diagonale Des Fous / Grand Raid Reunion

Dragon’s Back Ultra
  • 1992 Dragon’s Back Ultra (NN, 1992, 0:14:32). Documentary of the inaugural race in the year 1992. 
  • Dragon’s Back Race (Richard Heap / Slackjaw, 2012, 1:12:00) 💲 After the legendary 1992 race of the Dragon’s Back this run fell into oblivion. For 20 years – until its resurrection in the year 2012. This film documents the 2012 edition oft he Dragon’s Back Race and follows the participants over more than 200 miles of Welsh hills with more than 17000 meters of ascend.

Fat Dog 120
  • Fat Dog 120 (Project Talaria, 2016, 0:28:56) Fat Dog is one of the most challenging mountain ultra races in Kanada. Poetic film with great pictures.

Fell Running (in general)
  • Norman Matthews Winter Hill (Directors Cut) (Fellephant, 2013, 0:09:44) This film documents well the atmosphere and community of fell racings. 
  • Fellbound (Fellephant, 2013, 0:10:12) Atmospheric film with SloMo video sequences and dense synthesizer music. Gives a glimpse into what fellrunning is all about. 
  • Fellrunners (Fellephant, 2010, 0:07:45) Fellrunning is hard. This is shown in a compilation of footage taken from Ben Nevis, Belmont Winter Hill, Hendersons End, Winter Hill, Rivington Pike, Kentmere Horseshoe, Borrowdale, Langdale Horseshoe, Rydal Round and a recce of Grisedale Horseshoe. 

Gorge Waterfalls 100
  • The 2014 Gorge Waterfalls 50k (Ginger Runner, 2014, 0:11:22). The Columbia Gorge in Oregon is home of the Gorge Waterfalls 50/100 races – with a great course in the Oregon rainforest and with stunning waterfalls. Ginger Runner documents his run at Gorge Waterfalls 50k. There is a second film of the Gorge Waterfalls 100k documenting this race and the nature. 
  • Gorge Waterfalls 50/100k (Project Talaria, 2014, 0:08:23). Great Pictures from the 2014 Races of Gorge Waterfalls.

Hardrock 100
  • The Gathering (Billy Yang, 2017, 0:19:49) Sights and sounds of the Hardrock 100.
  • The Unknown (Billy Yang, 2017, 0:25:51) In 2014, ultrarunner Timothy Olson hit the wall about halfway through Hardrock 100. Although he was able to eventually finish, it was not the race he wanted. In 2016 he came back to redeem himself.
  • 100 Miles High. Darcy Piceu Africa and the 2013 Hardrock Ultramarathon (Hoka One One, 2016, 0:10:41) Darcy Piceu Africa is in a way „Mrs. Hardrock“. She has placed well at every edition of the race since she first came tot he San Juan Mountains in 2010. In 2013 she had a special aim: To finish smiling – and to break 29 hours.
  • Wild and Tough. 2014 Hardrock 100 (David Clifford / Hoka One One, 2014, 0:06:37) A look inside the 2014 Hardrock 100 Ultra Marathon.
  • Kissing the Rock (Matt Trappe Photo&Film / Ultimate Direction, 2016) This film sheds light on the hardrock course, culture and the history of the Silverton region.
  • Salomon Team - Hardrock 2011 (Salomon, 2011, 0:05:22). Short film on the Hardrock 100 race 2011, focussing on the salomon runner Julien Chorier. 
  • Get Ready for … Hardrock (North Face Get Ready for Season 04 Episode 06, 2013, 0:11:15). Film documents the race of Seb Chaignau with his eventual win at the 2013 Hardrock 100. 
  • Hardrunner (Mouss Production, in French, 2015, 0:13:15). What is the difference between European and American ultra trail runners? Sebastien Chaigneau and Joe Grant at the 2014 Hardrock 100. 
  • Krogers Canteen (Salomon Running TV Season 04 Episode 06, 2015, 0:07:47) Kroger’s Canteen  is a very special aid station at Hardrock 100 - perched on a tiny ledge, 13,100ft above sea level. The film documents the people who run it – and the runners who come through. 
  • Pacing Hardrock (Jeff Pelletier, 2017, 0:19:33). Jeff Pelletier’s story of pacing his friend Kevin Douglas at 2015 Hardrock 100. The film provides a glimpse of not only the race itself, but of the unique atmosphere and events surrounding the race in the historic mountain town of Silverton, Colorado. 

Himalayan 100
  • Himalayan 100. Of culture. Of course. (The Wolpertinger, 2011, 0:12:48). The Darjeeling Region in the Indian Himalayas is well known for tea – and not so much for running. Nevertheless, the 5 stage 100 Mile race of the Himalayan 100 has a rich history. This short film documents the route and the 2011 edition of this race.

Hong Kong 100
  • More than a Race (Lloyd Belcher Visuals, 2014, 0:34:53). More Than A Race follows the 100-kilometre journey of some of the world’s best ultra runners in the 2014 Vibram Hong Kong 100, the city’s original solo ultra marathon. 

Hongkong Trailwalker
  • Racing the Hidden Dragon (Mariette Faber / Minx Media, 2005, 0:34:00) 💲 This film follows a group of runners who are about to participate in the Hongkong Trailwalker which takes place in the rugged mountains of Hong Kong each year.  

Hurt 100
  • Profiling Hurt (Barry Walton, 2008, 0:34:35) This documentary follows ultrarunner Mark Gilligan at his 2008 HURT race.

Javelina Jundred
  • Javelina Jundred (Project Talaria, 2015, 0:21:24) The 100 mile long Javelina Jundred, a race run in six loops out in the desert in Arizona is the last chance qualifying race for the Western States Endurance Run. The film shows the 2014 participants on their attempt to get the qualifyer. 

Lakes in a day
  • A Journey Shared (Summit Fever Productions, 2017, 0:10:02). Three runners train and race the 50 mile ultramarathon „Lakes in a day“ through the iconic Lake District.  

La Ultra - The High
  • The High – Making the Toughest Race on Earth (BTV Productions, 2017, 1:53:48). La Ultra – The High is a 222 km long race in the remote region of Ladakh, India. It crosses passes over 5000 m of altitude. The film portraits the struggle oft he organizer to set this race up – and the struggle of the runners to complete the race. 

Leadville Trail 100
  • Race across the Sky (The African Attachment, 2012, 0:05:45) Ryan Sandes at the 2011 Leadville Trail 100 race. 
  • Running the Iconic Leadville 100 Ultra Marathon (Outside TV, 2016, 0:07:20) Four athletes (Maggie Walsh, Jason Michalack, Casey Hill, Luke Jay) running the iconic Leadville 100 in 2016. 
  • 1Hundred – Running the Impossible (Kevin Morris, 2011, 1:18:00) 1 HUNDRED is a  documentary of the human spirit and one of the most extreme races on the planet – the Leadville Trail 100. The documentary will follow 3 ordinary people on their journey leading up to and ultimately tackling this daunting race.  

Massanutten Mountain Trails 100
  • Forged in Mountains (Ron Heerkens Jr., 2017, 0:13:34) BeastCoast episode 4 follows the journey of Jamie Hobbs as he takes on the Hellgate 100K on his way to Massanutten 100 in Virginia.

Mount Kinabalu Climbathlon
  • Mount Kinabalu (Salomon Running TV Season 01, Episode 05, 2011, 0:04:46). Kilian Jornet and Marco de Gasperi run the Mount Kinabalu Climbathlon 2011, the 25th edition of this mountain race on the highest peak of southeast Asia.  

Mount Marathon
  • 3022ft. A Mt. Marathon Story (Max Romey, 2015, 1:03:26) 💲 Every year on the 4th of July, Mount Marathon in Alaska forms the setting for one of the purest mountain races of the world. Just up the mountain – and down. Steep, very steep. The film portraits some of the runners of the 2014 edition of this race and gives a glimpse of its rich history and the community of racers and spectators. 

Orcas Island 100
  • Orcas Island 100 (Project Talaria, 2016, 0:25:27). Athmospheric film of the Orcas Island 100 trail race, the island community, and the runners. 

Run the Rut
  • Trail Fighter (Fitsok/Outdoor Research, 2015, 0:06:11) Kyle Dietz, a mixed martial arts fighter turns ultra runner and prepares for and runs the Rut 50k.
  • Experience the Rut: Episode 1, episode 2 (Epic Montana, 2014, 0:11:15 in 2 episodes) The film takes us behind the scenes with Rut organizers Mike Wolfe and Mike Foote as they prepare for the 2014 50K.

Spine Race
  • The Montane Spine Race Film (Summit Fever Media, 2015, 1:00:15) 💲 Documentary of the 2015 Montane Spine Race.
  • Broken (Summit Fever Media, 2017, 1:06:26) 💲 Documentary of the 2017 Montane Spine Race.

Squamish 50-50
  • Squamish 50/50 (Ginger Runner, 2014, 0:28:01) Ginger Runner’s run at Squamish, completing a 50 Miler and a 50k in two consecutive days.
  • Squamish 50 (Arc’teryx, 2013, 0:03:10) Course highlights oft he Squamish 50 with interviews of the 2013 runners and the race director Gary Robbins.

TNF 100 Australia
  • The North Face Australia (Salomon Running TV Season 01 Episode 01, 2011, 0:05:46). This short film documents Kilian Jornet, Ryan Sandes, Francois d’Haene and Devon Yanko running the 2011 TNF 100 Australia in the Blue Mountains of southeastern Australia. 

 Tour de Tirol
  • Tour de Tirol (Alexander Sass, in German, 2016, 0:47:00) 💲 The film accompanies the 42 year old amateur runner Alexander Bille, who runs the Tour de Tirol for the first time. The Tour de Tirol is a 3-day event with a fast 10k run, a mountain marathon - finished off with a 25k trailrun.

Transalpine Run
  • Overcome (Stephan Wieser / Willpower Athletes, 2017, 0:22:54) Two athletes of „Team Willpower“ face ups and downs at the Transalpine Run.

  • I want to run. Das härteste Rennen der Welt (Achim Michael Hasenberg / CLA GmbH, in German, 2009, 1:29:00) 💲 The Trans-Europe-Run is a multistage race that took place three times so far: 2003, 2009 and 2012. The 2009 race, which is documented in this film, led from Bari in Italy tot he Nordkap in Norway. The film follows the runners on their 64 stages across Europe.

  • UTMB Perspectives (Salomon Running TV Season 01 Episode 03, 2011, 0:05:20) Kilian Jornet, Iker Carrera, Geoff Roes, Miguel Heras, Francois d’Haene, Jez Bragg, Joe Grant, Dakota Jones, Scott Jorek and Nick Clark share their perpectives on running the UTMB, running 100 mile races and running in the mountains in general.
  • Mont Blanc | CCC UTMB® 2015 (Billy Yang, 2016, 0:21:53). The film follows the athletes David Laney (UTMB), Tim Tollefson (CCC) and Zach Miller (CCC) in the 2015 race.
  • Curiosity (The North Face, 2014, 0:13:00). This film follows the stories of North Face team athletes Rory Bosio, Timothy Olson, and Hal Koerner in the 2014 UTMB. 
  • Battements / Heartbeats (Didier Lafond, 2011, 0:09:38). In a poetic film, Didier Lafond portraits the journey of the runners at the UTMB on their course through the Western Alps.
  • Dedicated - Sage Canaday at UTMB 2015 (Matt Trappe, 2015, 0:06:30). Sage Canaday on his journey around the Mont Blanc - from running competitively to being evacuated by helicopter. 

Vermont 100
  • Head – Heart – Feet (Michael Mooney and William Peters / Hammer & Saw Films, 2015, 1:38:00) 💲 Ultrarunner Zak Wieluns attempts to run The Vermont 100 Endurance Race, one of the original 100 mile runs in the USA. Filmed on the 25th edition of the race.

Western States Endurance Run 100
  • Unbreakable (JB Benna/Journeyfilm, 2010, 1:45:00) 💲 This movie has become the classic Western States Movie. It documents the 2010 race with the men’s favourites Geoff Roes, Tony Krupicka, Hal Koerner and Kilian Jornet. Trailer und film here.
  • A Race for the Soul (Brian Harder, 2001, 0:52:00) 💲 A documentary oft he 2001 race with some of the elite runners of the day (Scott Jurek, Tim Twietmeyer, Ann Trason). Besides these well known runners, the film also focusses on some middle- and back-of-the-pack runners. Copy in limited resolution here
  • Western Time (Billy Yang, 2014, 0:28:42) On June 28, 2014 Nike Trail athlete Sally McRae ran the original and most prestigious 100 mile race, the Western States 100 for the very first time. This short film documents her story and her journey leading up to this event including qualifying at the Montrail Ultra Cup race, the inaugural Sean O'Brien 50 mile earlier in the year.
  • From Squaw to Auburn | My Western States 100 Race (Billy Yang, 2015, 0:21.57): The film documents the journey of Billy Yang at the Western States 100 2015.
  • Life in a day (Billy Yang, 2017, 1:02:17) The great Ann Trason compared running 100 miles to living „Life in a day“. This film follows the journey of four female runners at the Western States Endurance Run 2016: Devon Yanko, Magda Boulet, Kaci Lickteig and Anna Mae Flynn.  
  • A Decade on (Ginger Runner, 2017, 0:40:48) In 2006, after 7 years of victories by Scott Jurek, Brian Morrison led the Western States Endurance Run to the track in Auburn. There he collapsed, was helped to the finish line only to be disqualified later, because he didn’t finish the race under his own power. Ten years later, he returns to Squaw Valley to redeem himself.
  • Desperate Dreams (Maria Centrella / Daniel Blackburn / Chris Centrella, Centreburn Productions, 1982/1983, 0:50:54/ 0:47:35) 💲 Currently not available. Race Videos of the WSER 1982 and 1983 – the really early days of the WSER with wins of the legendary Jim King and Jim Howard. Unfortunately, the film is no longer available as DVD in the WSER shop. If you have old-school ultrarunning buddies, ask them to check their VHS collections.
  • Endurance Junkies: Blood, sweat and tears and the Western States 100 (NN, 2012, 0:07:43). Three women – Amy Dodson, Meghan Arbogast and Shanon Farar-Griefer – prepare for Western States 2011. (Teaser only, no full film has been produced).
  • Diamond to the Rough (Myles Smythe, 2016, 0:42:00) 💲 Eric Byrnes played Baseball in the Major League for 11 seasons – now he is attempting to run WSER.
  • In One Day (JB Benna / Journeyfilm, 2015, 00:26:00) 💲 Ivan Zinn, a Chief Investment Officer from New York, runs the Western States.
  • This Is Your Day (Myles Smythe, 2015, 0:50:48) 💲 Western States 2015. Rob Krar (winner oft he previous year), Karl Hoagland (Publisher of UltraRunning Magazine) and fast ultrarunner and mother Caroline Boller take on the journey from Squaw to Auburn. This film followst hem.
  • Running Madness (Susan Cohn, 2002, 1:14:46). Western States 2002. A lottery gets you in, and something indescribable gets you through. "Running Madness" seeks to unravel what that "indescribable something" is, via interviews with the runners, their pacers, the hundreds of volunteers who show up year after year (as addicted as the runners are) to work the aid stations, the organizers and the medical staff. 
  • Team Salomon 5 Continents – Western States 100 (Salomon Trailrunning Episode 02, 2011, 0:05:01). Second attempt for Kilian Jornet at Western States. This time he manages to win the race. 
  • Solstice (Andy Hofman, 2016, 0:50:33) 💲 Ashley Lindsay, a rookie, and her journey at the Western States Endurance Run. Trailer hier.   
  • Thirty Hours (Alex Massey, Lucas Vazquez, 2016, 0:12:28). Wally Hesseltine tries to finish the Western States Endurance Run to become the oldest finisher.
  • Flock to the Finish (REI, 2016, 0:06:35). Devon Yanko dropped out of Western States in 2010. Now, in 2016, she is back and has only one aim: To finish. 
  • Racing the Darkness | Sage Canaday & the 2016 Western States 100 (Ginger Runner, 2016, 0:12:06) After having to be evacuated by helicopter at the 2015 UTMB, Sage Canaday sets his sight on the 2016 Western States 100 to finish his first 100 miler. Being 2nd in the first half oft he race, the race then turns into a fight for the finish. 
  • 100 Miles Out West (Red Bull, 2017, 0:07:29). After finishing 2nd at Western States 2012, Ryan Sandes had some years that went less than optimal, where he had to fight injury and illness. In 2017 he returned to Western States, but more as a dark horse. The movie documents his training, preparation and his 2017 win at Western States. 

Zugspitz Trailrun Challenge
  • Together (Stephan Wieser / Team Willpower, German&English, with german&english subtitles, 2016, 0:12:41). Several runners of Team Willpower meet at the Zugspitz Trailrun Challenge. They are quite diverse, but they fight together. 


  • Aconcagua: A new Chance (Wiland Pinsdorf / Red Bull, 2016, 0:46:51). The brazilian Ultrarunner Fernanda Maciel tries to break the 24 hour barrier for a round trip to Aconcagua starting at the park entrance. 

Appalachian Trail
  • Made to be Broken (Red Bull, 2017, 0:42:44). This film documents Karl Meltzer’s AT FKT in 2016.

Berliner Höhenweg
  • Nur der Weg ist das Ziel (Hans Peter Stauber / Servus TV, in German, 2012, 0:46:00) Currently not available. Trailrunner Markus Kröll always dreamt of running the Berlin High Route in the Zillertal within one day. This involves to run 70k with 6700 meters of vertical gain. The film accompanies Markus Kröll on the route.

Bob Graham Round
  • Run Forever: Nicky Spinks and the Double Bob Graham (Nick Brown, 2016, Inov8, 0:48:08) The inspirational 49 year old  cancer survivor Nicky Spinks became the fastest person to run a double Bob Graham Round.
  • Nicky Spinks – Bob Graham Round (Richard Heap, 2015, 0:19:00) 💲 In April 2015 Nicky Spinks set out to beat her own women's record of 18 hours 12 minutes for the Bob Graham Round, the legendary Lake District fell running endurance challenge. This film follows the highs and lows of her record attempt.

Corsica Traverse GR20
  • Kilian’s Corsican Quest: part 1 & part 2 (Salomon, Kilian’s Quest Season 01 Episode 02, 2009, 9:49). In June 2009, Kilian Jornet set a new FKT (32h54m24s) at the „classic“ hiking route GR20 in Corsica. 
  • Crossing Corsica (Red Bull.TV, 2016, 0:28:04). This film documents the FKT attempt of Francois d’Haene on the GR20 in Corsica.

Drakensberg Grand Traverse
  • Travailen (The African Attachment / Red Bull, 2014, 0:26:56). The Drakensberg is the eastern portion of the Great Escarpment. The Drakensberg Grand Travers is an unmarked route of about 220 km stretching at the top of the escarpment.  In 2014, Ryan Sandes and Ryno Griesel attempted to set a new FKT at the DGT.

Fish River Canyon
  • The Beauty of the Irrational (The African Attachment, 2012, 0:06:14). The Fish River is located in the southern part of Namibia and forms the longest continous canyon in Africa. In 2012,  Ryan Sandes attempted to set a new FKT along the 90 km long Fish River Trail.  

John Muir Trail
  • The Long Haul (JB Benna/Journeyfilm, 2014, 0:38:00). Mike Wolfe and Hal Koerner try to set a new FKT at the JMT. KOSTENPFLICHTIG. Trailer here.

  • Kilimanjaro: part 1 &part 2 (Salomon, Kilian‘s Quest Season 02, 2010, 10:43). As part oft he „Kilian’s Quest“ project, ultrarunner Kilian Jornet sets a new FKT on the Kilimanjaro both for the ascent and for the round trip. Simon MTuy, a previous record holder, is helping him in this attempt.  

  • Reach your Limits – Half a Million Steps of Pain (Dimo Petkov, 2015, 0:52:00) 💲 Kiril Nikolov, known as Disl, is a bulgarian mountain runner. This film documents his journey along the 600km stretch of mountain trails between Kom on the west border of Bulgaria to Emine on the Black Sea coast. His purpose: To set a new course record.

Long Trail
  • Finding Traction (Jame Jacobsen, 2014, 0:57:00) 💲 In 2012, ultrarunner Nikki Kimball set out on the Long Trail in Vermont in an attempt to break not only the women’s FKT, but to be the fastest person who ever ran the Long Trail. Trailer here.

Pacific Crest Trail
  • Run for Colin (Michael Dillon, 2014, 0:33:41). In 2014, Joe McConaughy sets out for an attempt to break the supported FKT on the PCT. He does that in memory of his cousin Colin and in order to raise funds for Cancer Care.
  • The Runner: David Horton's 2,700 Mile Run of the PCT (JB Benna / Journeyfilm, 2007, 1:17:00) 💲 Ultrarunner David Horton tries to set a new FKT at the Pacific Crest Trail.
  • One Step at a Time (Steven Mortinson, 2017, 0:31:00) 💲 Ultrarunners Yassine Diboun, Scott Loughney, and Travis Liles attempt to break the record for the FKT across Oregon on the PCT. This film documents their journey along the 453-mile stretch. 

Pony Express Trail
  • Human Express (Red Bull, 2011, 0:53:09) The Pony Express Trail is the legendary fast mail route connecting Sacramento, California to St. Joseph, Missouri. In 2010, ultrarunner Karl Meltzer became the first human who ran the whole Pony Express Trail in a single push within 40 days. 

Pyrenees Range Traverse
  • Pyrenees, part 1, part 2, part 3 (Kilian’s Quest, Season 02, 2010, 0:15:36) As part of the Kilian’s Quest project, Kilian Jornet sets out on a traverse of the Pyrennees from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean sea. The original route is 700km long with 35000m elevation gain and loss. However, due to snow, Jornet had to reroute. He eventually ran 850 km with 45000m of vert in 113 hours within 8 consecutive days.   

Ramsay Round
  • Ramsay Round, part 1 & part 2 (The Adventure Show, 2017, 0:15:58). Donnie Campbell sets a new FKT for the completion of Ramsay Round in Winter.  

Tahoe Rim Trail
  • Go West Young Man / Kilian & co / Hymn to the Rim (Salomon / Kilian‘s Quest Season 01, 2009, 0:14:20). The Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) is a 165-mile long loop trail around Lake Tahoe. In 2009, Kilian Jornet tried to break the FKT of Tim Twietmeyer for the supported FKT.

Wainwright Summits
  • Wainwright Summit Attempt (Alastair Lee / Posing Productions, 2015, 0:42:58) 💲 Fellrunner Steve Birkinshaw tries to break Joss Naylor's record by linking up all 214 Lakeland Wainwright Summits in under seven days.

Wonderland Trail
  • Wonderland: Gary Robbins' FKT around Mount Rainier (Ginger Runner, 2015, 0:36:21) The Wonderland Trail is a rugged 95-mile loop around Mt. Rainier, the highest peak in Washington State. This film follows ultrarunner Gary Robbins as he sets a new FKT on the Wonderland Trail. 

Zion Traverse
  • The Zion Traverse (Patagonia, 2012, 0:03:15). The film follows Krissy Moehl and Luke Nelson in their attemt to break the respective FKTs for the Zion Traverse.  
  • Chasing FKTs (Myles Smythe / Montrail, 2016, 0:06:09). Amy Sproston and Joelle Vaught run the 48 miles through Zion National Park in order to lower the FKT 
  • Hayden Hawks’ Fastest-Known Time Across Zion National Park (Derick Lytle / Hoka One One, 2017, 0:02:32) Ultrarunner Hayden Hawks sets the record for the fastest-known time on the traverse across Zion National Park.
  • Zion Traverse Double Crossing FKT (Derick Lytle / Beach House Studio, 2014, 0:02:41) Jennilyn Eaton and Craig Lloyd set a new FKT fort he Double Crossing of Zion National Park. 


Gordy Ainsleigh
  • The Original (Salomon Running TV Season 03 Episode 06, 2014, 0:08:16) Gordy Ainsleigh created the Western States Endurance Run – just by running a race that normally was covered on horseback. 

Mike Aish
  • Crushing Hope (Godu Productions, 2012, 0:03:58) Kiwi ultrarunner Mike Aish has participated twice in the Olympic Games. In 2012 he has set sight on a new goal: To compete at the 2012 Leadville 100 Run, the “race across the sky”. 

Magdalena Boulet
  • 15 Hours: Magdalena Boulet (Billy Yang, 2016, 0:06:10) Magdalena Boulet has won the Western States 100 in 2015. But she is so much more than just a Western States Champion. She is an Olympian, a mother, a wife, an immigrant.

Jeff Browning
  • The Double (Matt Trappe, 2016, 0:09:58) Western States 100 and Hardrock 100 – two vastly different races. Only very few people would consider to run them within the same year – as there are only 19 days of rest in between. Jeff Browning did race them – and he did well.

Caballo Blanco
  • Run Free: The True Story of Caballo Blanco (Sterling Noren / Noren Films, 2015, 1:32:00). Caballo Blanco (born as Michael Randall Hickman, later Micah True) was a middleweight boxer who started climbing and trailrunning in the 80ies. In the 90ies, he went to Mexico to spend time and to run with the native Tarahumara or Raramuri. He became famous when he was featured in the book “Born to Run” by Christopher McDougall. He died in 2012 on a morning run in the Gila Wilderness. This film tries to portrait the real figure of Micah True. 

Adam Campbell

Donnie Campbell
  • Donnie Campbell (Salomon TV, 2017, 0:07:18) Donnie Campbell was brought up in the Isle of Skye, joined the Royal Marines at age 17 – and one year later he went to Iraq. It was a long journey from there to becoming the British Ultra Trail Champion. Donnie shares his story.  

Sage Canaday

After a break she came back – and moved up to the “real” ultra-world by winning Hardrock 100 twice in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, she comes back to this race, that really has a place in her heart.

Clare Gallagher

  • Chasing the distance (National Sierra Club, 2016, 0:04:04) The film is a personal look into the lives of ultra-running athletes and husband and wife team Rob Krar and Christina Bauer. 

Stevie Kremer
  • The Teacher (Salomon Running TV S4 E04, 2015, 0:04:42). Stevie Kremer is a second grade teacher from the small idyllic mountain town of Crested Butte, Colorado. She also happens to be considered one of the worlds top trail runners. This film gives a glimpse into balancing her life, her competitive streak and her love for teaching.

Anton Krupicka
  • In the high country (The Wolpertinger, 2013, 0:35:00) 💲Anton Krupicka started running on roads. But this film is all about running in the mountains. The film accompanies Anton on his runs as well as on his free-soloing tours of the Rockies.
  • Purpose (La Sportiva, 2017, 0:15:16). Anton Krupicka has won major 100 mile races. Then he was sidelined due to persisting injuries. This hasn’t decreased his love for exploring the mountains. Now he runs, but bikes and climbs as well.
  • 15 hours (Billy Yang, 2015, 0:06:12) Through the lens of Billy Yang, Anton Krupicka shares a normal day in his life with the viewer. And he talks about growing up in Nebraska, about his injury, and how he developed in the person and runner has become.
  • The Ingenous Choice (François Tornier & Maxime Tornier / Outdoor Live, 2014, 0:07:06). To the words of Henry David Thoreau,  Anton Krupicka is shown running the UTMB while he wonders why he loves mountain running so much.
  • The Runner in Winter (The Wolpertinger, 2011, 0:09:56) Anton Krupicka runs through the Colorado Rockies in winter.

  • UTMB 2013 (Buff, 2013, 0:05:09). The race at UTMB in 2013 was not at all a perfect one for Anton Krupicka: He had to DNF about 140 km into the race, 17 hours after the start due to injury. Nevertheless he enjoyed the course.  
  • UTMB 2014 (Buff, 2014, 0:05:41) After injuries flared up time and time again, it was rather unlikely that Anton Krupicka would run the UTMB in 2014. Then, he felt better, leaving him just one week of proper training. Given these circumstances, he could only opt to let the front of the pack run away and enjoy the course.

Karl Meltzer
  • The Speedgoat (Hoka One One, 2017, 0:19:37) “Speedgoat” Karl Meltzer has won a ton of 100 mile races, has set the FKT at the Pony Express Trail and at the Appalachian Trail and is a race organizer. He was not always like that. He started as a bartender in Utah. The film describes his journey from there to him as successful professional ultrarunner. 

Joss Naylor
  • Naylor’s Run (Eric Robson, 2009, 0:51:00) 💲 Joss Naylor is a trailrunning legend. On his 60th birthday, he celebrates by attempting the 60 highest Lakeland peaks in 36 hours, a run which measures almost 110 miles and involves about 40,000 feet of ascent.
  • Joss Naylor - Iron Man (Eric Robson, 2009, 0:55:00) 💲 The legendary athlete Joss Naylor, retired shepherd from Wasdale, wanted to celebrate his fifty years of competitive fell running. So on the longest day of the year he set off from Mungrisdale in the northern fells to run home to Greendale in the Wasdale valley.  
  • Behind the scenes #5: Life of a Mountain: Scafell Pike (Terry Abraham, 2013, 0:05:46).   • Il corridore – The runner (Paolo Casalis/Stefano Scarafia, 2010, 1:21:00) 💲 Marco Olmo is a legend. At the age of 58 he won the UTMB in 2006, arguably one of the hardest mountain ultramarathons at that time. The movie looks into the motivation for running such distances and follows marco olmo on his journey to return to UTMB.

Mira Rai
  • Mira (Lloyd Belcher Visuals, 2016, 0:42:00) 💲 Mira Rai grew up in a small mountain town in Nepal. As her parents couldn’t afford to pay for her education, she joined the Maoist army at the age of 14. Then she met some trailrunners and started to discover her talent in this sport. With the help of some western coaches, she managed to become one oft the best trail and sky runners. The film tells her story.  
  • How this Former Child Soldier Became an Ultrarunning Prodigy (National Geographic, 2017, 0:08:36) Mira Rai was voted 2017 Adventurer of the Year by National Geographic. In this video she tells her story.

  • Life on the Fells (Todd Gardner / James Stevens, 2015, 0:05:13) Adam Briggs is a passionate fell runner with a unique story. Born with congenital heart defects, Briggs has undergone more than 60 surgeries, including a heart transplant. He now dreams of completing the famous Bob Graham round.
  • The Bob Graham Round: Running the Fells with Friends (Kaleel Zibe, 2017, 0:27:04) Tony Holt attempts to run the iconic Bob Graham Round. It is not only the round, but running it with his friends, that makes this adventure so special for him.
  • Everest in a day (Dimi Nakov, 2012, 0:16:15) Is it possible to climb the whole height of Mt. Everest in one day? Surely not if you try it on Mt. Everest. Kiwi Ultrarunner Mal Law tries a different approach: He chooses the odd hill and climbs it 148 times to reach the total elevation change of Mt. Everest.
  • Beauties and the Bog - Run the High Peak Marathon (Ali Gover, Bodil Oushoorn, Libby Kerr, Lisa Trollope, 2016, 0:09:28) The High Peak Marathon is an over-night mountain marathon for teams of four which follows a route based on the Derwent Watershed over the high moors of Derbyshire. The film follows a team of four girls who aim to run this marathon during their training and preparation. At the end they are prepared for everything … the course, harsh conditions, grueling weather – but is the race prepared for them.  
  • Fell Racing Shorts (Andy Holden, 2015, 0:06:46) This short films captures the essentials of Fell Running.  

Crossing Canyons
  • The Canyon (Salomon TV, 2016, 0:04:13) Rickey Gates and Dakota Jones pack their running shoes and head into the canyons. 
  • Discover Crazy R2R2R (Bard Parnell, 2014, 1:04:17) 💲 Four ultrarunners  challenge themselves by trying to complete the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim. The film follows them on their exploration of the Grand Canyon corridor trails. Trailer here.

Whole Continents
  • Running America (Kevin Kerwin, 2008, 1:25:58) 💲 Marshall Ulrich and Charlie Engle set out for an expedition through their homeland: They aim to run about 70 miles each day for 46 consecutive days. The film unravels, whether their bodies and minds hold up that challenge.
  • The 3000 Mile Men (Ben J Southern, 2012, 1:48:31). A documentary film of the transcontinental run across the United States by the Brits Chris Finill and Steve Pope in 2011. 


Trail Culture
  • The Trails are Free (Lindsey Topham, 2017, 0:53:00) The film tells the story of the Boston based Trail Animals Running Club (TARC) and how it promotes the culture of ultra running through a series of grassroots, community based races in the greater Boston area.
  • Top Trails Series (Hoka One One, 2016/2017, 10-20 minutes each). This series shows where to run close to big cities throughout the USA. Even more, it introduces the individual trail- and running culture seen through the eyes of local trailrunners. 

Road Trips
  • Running Road Trip (Guillaume Arthus, 2014, 3-8 minutes each). Guillaume Arthus takes us with him on a road trip through the USA and stops in scenic National Parks or National Monuments for a run. The videos are filmed during this run and underscored with energetic music. 
  • Runnexplorer (Guillaume Arthus, 2015-2017, 3-5 minutes each). Guillaume Arthus continues his roadtrip – now through Europe. He runs trails in different countries and on different terrain. 
  • Running the World (Mountains Legacy, 2016-2017, 1-3 minutes each). The guys of Mountains Legacy Team (Cedric and Jordan Manoukian, Florent Andreani) like to run all over the world. Their speciality: Running ridges. 

Other Cultures
  • Dream Trip: Nepal (Salomon, 2017, 0:13:00) Tyler Courville’s Dream is to run in Nepal – together with Mira Rai. It came true … 
  • Trail Running in Japan (inov8, 2017, 0:08:33) Peter Maksimow has always been interested in the running culture of Japan. In a pretty chaoitic journey he heads to Japan to participate in the Utsukushigahara Trail Race.
  • Japanese Spirit (Get Ready For Trail Season 05 Episode 03 / The North Face, 2014, 0:09:25). Japanese trailrunner Tsuyoshi Kaburaki talks about interconnection between body and mind – and about the Japanese trail culture.
  • Nihon (Salomon / Wandering Fever, 2016, 0:04:56) Shugendo is a highly syncretic religion developed in the Heian period in Japan, in the mountains of Honshu. The relationship between man and nature is very important. Rickey Gates and Anna Frost try to experience the strong bond with nature in the Japanese mountains.

British Fells and Trails
  • A Fine Line (Nevis Landscape Partnership, 2016, 0:03:17) Michael Tweedly runs the ridge to Ben Nevis, the highes peak in Great Britain. Superb aereal footage! 
  • Running Scotland's Notorious An Teallach "The Forge" (Outside TV / Rab, 2014, 0:07:05). Colin Meek, Paul Tattersall and Lee Flemming run An Teallach in Northwest Scotland, a wild and rugged mountain. 
  • Suilven – The Trail Runner (Chris Davies, 2015, 0:05:32). Trailrunner Tom Hill runs the amazing Suilven Mountain in the Assynt region of Scotland.

Race Course Previews

  • Trailpike (Geoff Cox / Richard Berry, 2017, 0:12:00). Poet and fellrunner Geoff Cox created a series of 3 short poetic films recognizing the three fellrunning legends that have given their names to three legendary fell running rounds: Bob Graham, Joss Naylor, Gerry Charnley.   
    Why Run 100 Miles? (Andrew Kornylak, 2014, 0:03:02) The Thunder Rock 100 is a 100 mile race through the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee. But this film is not about this race. It is about the question, why people run 100 miles given the high chance of failure.  
  • For the Love (Luis Pena, 2014, 0:02:55) A love letter to trailrunning and to exploring the Marin Headlands.
  • Racing Time (Adele Myers / Ra Page, 2012, 0:03:09) An elderly runner sets out to run through harsh terrain and conditions, struggling with the elements and with time itself. Adaptation of the poem “Racing Time” by Chris Woods. 
  • Darkness: How Ultrarunning Can Strip away our Emotional Barriers (Tegyn Angel / Wildplans Production, 2013, 0:05:36). Why do we run ultramarathons – time and time again?  Well knowing, that there is a dark place after the race. 
  • Give me Trails (Denver Miller / JR Kraus, 2015, 0:02:29) A poem written in the head of trailrunner Matt Smythe during running. 
  • Why we run (Salomon Running TV Season 03 Episode 01, 2013, 0:05:32) Bernd Heinrich is a retired Professor living in a log cabin in the woods of Western Maine. He has held numerous running records throughout his life – he now looks back. 
  • Trail Dog (Salomon Running TV Season 05 Episode 02, 2016, 0:04:27). Trail Dog is an ode to the beauty and happiness that can be found in the simplest of things - friendship. 
  • The running connection (Mountain Hardwear, 2014, 0:02:31). Mountain running is: Fast. Simple. Quiet. Meditative. 
  • The last mile (John Burkett / Red Tide Productions, 2013, 1:08:00) 💲 This film is about running and the reasons behind it. John Burkett, the filmmaker of this movie, was destroying himself by a rather unhealthy lifestlye. One day when he was walking his dog, he decided to do a short run. This soon became part of his daily routine – and the miles increased. First, he was feeling joy and satisfaction. Now it is much more.
  • My Addiction (Casey Neistat, 2017, 0:02:51) Casey Neistat runs to Lions Head near Cape Town – an uplifting running film. 
  • Christian Schiester (MyASICS, 2012, 0:02:02) Austrian Trailrunner Christian Schiester tells his story – how he turned his life around by trail running. 


Marathon Monks
  • Der Marathonmönch von Kyoto (Länder – Menschen – Abenteuer / SWR, in German, 2015, 0:43:45) Tendai monk Hoshino Endo is on a special mission: He does the „Kaihogyo“, a seven year cycle of walking/running 30-84 kilometers per day, 100 days a year. This is no sports, it is a special ascetic excercise.
  • Les mille jours ou la marche éternelle d‘Ajari (Daniel Moreau / ARTE, in German, 1999, 0:54:52) The film follows a monk of the buddhist Tendai sect, who lives in a monastery at mount Hiei close to Kyoto. On his Kaihogyo, a spiritual ultramarathon done in seven years, he covers a total of 38400 kilometers within 1000 days. 
  • Marathon Monks (Journeyman Picutures, 2008, 0:19:48) In their quest for enlightenment the legendary monks of Mount Hiei put themselves through an excruciating endurance challenge: 1000 days of long-distance running/walking. The film follows Ajari Genshin Fujinami on this journey.
  • Marathon Monks of Mt. Hiei (Channel 4, NA, 0:52:14) The film follow Tendai monk Tanno Kakudo on the final days of his Kaihogyo.
  • Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei (Christopher J. Hayden / DER, 2002, 0:57:00) Based on the book of John Steven, “Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei”, this documentary follows the Kaihogyo of Tanno Kakudo. 
  • The Seven Year Pilgrimage to Enlightenment (Ivan Olita / Nowness, 2017, 0:06:00). The film explores the practice of Kaihogyo, the spiritual practice on Mount Hiei, Japan.
  • L’école Tendai des moines du mont Hiei, part 1 and part 2 (Sagesses bouddhistes, in French, 2015, 0:29:22 total) French documentary about the Tendai monks on Mt. Hiei, particularly the marathon monks.   

Not quite a documentary
  • Without Limits (Robert Towne, 1998, 1:58:00) 💲 Biographical sports film about the life of Steve Prefontaine.
  • On the Edge (Rob Nilsson, 1986, 1:35:00) 💲 Fictional story about an ageing professional runner, who is training to return to the Dipsea race, one of the oldest trail races, for the final time.  Trailer here
  • The Terry Fox Story (Ralph L. Thomas, 1983, 1:37:00) The film narrates the life of the Canadian amputee and long distance runner Terry Fox. 
  • The Long Run (Jean Stewart, 2002, 1:53:00) Running coach Berry just has lost his job and with it his self-esteem. Then he meets Christine, an inexperienced young runner, whom he aims to coach and train for the Comrades Marathon. Is it possible to overcome the lack of experience by hard work? 

Other distances
  • The Long Green Line (Matthew Arnold, 2008, 1:29:00) 💲 Coach Joe Newton can look back to a very successful coachin career: For the past 48 years, he has been coaching the boys cross-country team at York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois. Now they aim to win the 25th state title. The film does not only portrait the topscorers of this team, but also the middle- and back of the pack runners in their endeavor. 
  • Great American Footrace (Dan Big Bee & Lily Shangreaux / VisionMaker Video, 2010, 0:53:00) 💲 The story of 19 year old Andy Payne, who wins the 3,422-mile foot Bunion Derby across America designed to bring attention to the newly constructed Route 66 Highway.  Trailer here
  • Terry Fox: I had a Dream (John F. Simpson / Canadian Cancer Society, 1981, 0:45:54). Documentary on the Canadian amputee and ultradistance runner Terry Fox. 
  • Run for your Life (Judd Ehrlich, 2008, 1:35:00) Documentary on Fred Lebow, the first-generation Jewish immigrant from Transylvania, Romania, who founded and ran the New York City Marathon.
